An Epic in Four Parts (Part I)

  • Description :

First part showcases the prologue of this tragedy. At the genesis, in the so-called garden of Eden, two giants share a hibiscus flower—an exotic plant of the orients, symbolizing the ‘other’. Inside the flower, two sides of the ovary breeds opposite kinds of people, set to live in opposition to one another in different realms guarded by a twinning yet opposite forces (the Pegasuses). Two suns, floating on the sides of the giants, represent both life and death as the natural structure of human life. Their small presences symbolize that this established order is a young ‘universe’. Perched at the other side of the flower, another giant is staring hungrily at the stima shared by the two giants. Even within the realm of these masters, tension is rising.

This part was directly inspired by the way Indonesia was formed. European superpowers come to the tropics to seek spices and expand their sphere of influences, establishing colonies and imposing territorial claims upon pre-existing local civilizations. In the process of sustaining themselves, they drain the natural resources and labor of the people, all while establishing a segregated social structure in which various ethnic and social groups—already divided as they were—then put against each other. The brutality of this was often overshadowed by the glory experienced by these European empires, who see themselves as masters of these ‘exotic’ lands. However, as per history dictated, this did not last forever. Eventually, another giant—Imperial Japan as a then-rising superpower from the East—would disrupt the balance.
