Half of a Soul (Nyi and Ki Hadjar Dewantara)

  • Media : Acrylic on canvas
  • Dimension : 100 x 120 cm
  • Year : 2025
  • Description :

This work honors the partnership between Sutartinah and Ki Hadjar Dewantara, redefining her from "just a wife" to his intellectual and social equal. It highlights their collective survival during their exile in the Netherlands alongside the rest of the Tiga Serangkai (Cipto Mangunkusumo and Ernest Douwes Dekker). During this time, Sutartinah's presence and labor were crucial. While the men earned money from their writing, she managed the group's ever-tightening budget and worked as a kindergarten teacher. The piece also highlights her influence in redirecting Suwardi's (Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s) focus from politics to education with a simple yet powerful principle: soldiers may die in battle, but educated youth will continue the fight.

The background uses the sun and moon as an allegory for Sutartinah and the men, with her as the sun to their moon, highlighting her as the vital support of their continued fight. The foreground depicts the dream that began to form between Sutartinah and Suwardi: a garden of knowledge for all, the future foundation of Taman Siswa. Water lilies, a nod to Sutartinah's poetry, are depicted rising from the historical "mud" of the Dutch Indies, a metaphor for the collective enlightenment of the Indonesian people.
